SMALL GROUP THERAPY
Small group therapy sessions are for children ages 5-15*. This program has been specifically designed for those who have learning differences, social challenges, and other special needs.
*Older clients may join if developmentally appropriate for the group
These sessions provide a unique play therapy experience that may be practiced independently or used to compliment other types of therapy. In these sessions, Carrie Heller, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist, and circus arts professionals help participants with:
- Mind and Body Coordination: Focus, balance, orientation of one’s body in space, and flexibility
- Physical Improvements: Muscle tone, overall strength, and motor skills (engaging the whole body to achieve a fluid, smooth movement)
- Social Skills: Cooperation, taking turns, sharing, joining in with friends, making and maintaining friendships, compromising and learning to be flexible, communication including conversation skills, reading and understanding social situations, perspective taking, using impulse control, managing frustration, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal space
- Emotional Growth: Self-esteem, empathy, and overcoming fears
As participants, children and pre-teens will stimulate their imagination and creativity by learning all of our Circus Arts Therapy activities in a playful, social setting, while focusing on community building, teamwork and safety. We work with both the physical and social aspects of timing: not only of when to do a trick, but also when to speak and when to listen. Through this form of movement we work on balance, strength, coordination and flexibility. In the process of learning these fun and unique circus skills, clients will experience "Therapy in Action.”
The small group setting provides a place for individuals who have trouble in large groups and might require a high staff to student ratio. Therapy groups are inclusive, and siblings are welcome to register.
Sessions are based on the school calendar, and are available August-December and January-May. A new summer session has been added. Please call Carrie at 404-549-3000 for information and registration. New clients may join Circus Arts Therapy groups at any time during a session, provided there is space available. Check our registration information and policies and call Carrie at 404-549-3000 to register.
